Wide swaths of the south Pacific, Asia and Australia are braced for a tsunami after a devastating magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit the coast of Chile early for a minute and half at 3:34am (6:34am GMT) today (02/27/2010).
Officials in Japan and Australia warn a tsunami from the earthquake is likely to hit Asian shorelines within 24 hours. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii issued a tsunami caution for areas across the region.
The Center also said a tsunami advisory was in effect for the coast of California and coastal areas of Alaska from Kodiak to Attu. The Center said sea-level readings confirm that a tsunami has been generated which could cause widespread damage.
