There’s nothing unusual about Buddha statues and sculptures of religious deities. But there’s one sculpture in the Gunma region of Japan that stands out among the rest. This intricately detailed Buddha effigy is housed within an Itakura community center and, from a distance at least, appears to be comprised of jewels and gemstones. Take a few steps closer and you’ll quickly realize the icky truth. Those aren’t jewels and gems, they’re thousands of dead bugs. It took the artist six years to create the statue.
